Baclofen is a muscle relaxer and antispastic medication. It is most commonly used to treat multiple sclerosis, though patients also buy Baclofen to treat other conditions, such as cerebral palsy or spinal cord injuries. Patients should not buy Baclofen to treat Parkinson's disease or symptoms resulting from stroke.

This medication can be used in patients of all ages, but be aware that young or elderly patients will likely require modified dosing.

Patients often buy Baclofen under its brand names of Lioresal, Liofen, Gablofen, Clofen, or many others. The medication is available in three formulas; injection, tablets, and topical cream. Injections are usually administered directly into the spinal fluid for severe cases; this is done in a medical setting. Tablets are middle-of-the-road, while topical creams are for light pain/spasticity issues.

Dosage & Administration

Baclofen is useful in treating the spastic movement disorders associated with multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and spinal cord injuries. The medication alleviates the stiffness, pain, spasms, and other symptoms; patients also report improved muscle control. The alleviation of these symptoms provides obvious benefit for patients.

Another reason patients buy Baclofen is that it's non-addictive; the medication does not produce the euphoria or other positive feelings associated with so many similar medications. It is very unlikely that patients will find themselves craving Baclofen.

Treatment with Baclofen depends on which formulation is being used. Since injections are administered by healthcare professionals, we'll look at tablets and creams.

Tablets are taken 2 to 4 times per day, with 3 times per day being standard. They can be taken with or without food as desired. Treatment is typically:

  • Days 1 to 3: Take 5 mg three times per day.
  • Days 4 to 6: Take 10 mg three times per day.
  • Days 7 to 9: Take 15 mg three times per day.
  • And so on; increase dosage by 5 mg every three days until an effective dose is found.
  • Do not exceed 80 mg total per day.

Doctor instructions may vary from the above; doctor instructions should always be followed.

The topical cream is much more variable, as it's often combined with other active ingredients. In general, the cream is applied to the problem area 1 to 3 times per day, to alleviate mild pain. Results can vary, however, depending on other ingredients in the cream.

In both cases treatment may continue indefinitely. Patients who buy Baclofen tablets should be aware of abruptly ending treatment; doing so can cause withdrawal effects. This generally applies to patients taking Baclofen long-term (two months or more) but effects can occur at low or high doses.

Abrupt discontinuation can cause:

  • Auditory, visual, or tactile hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Delusions
  • Behavioral disturbances
  • Memory impairment
  • Extreme muscle rigidity

These symptoms can be avoided by gradually tapering down dosage when it's time to end treatment. A doctor can help come up with a discontinuation plan, a longer-term reversal of the start of treatment. Not everyone experiences withdrawal symptoms, and if abrupt withdrawal is attempted but symptoms appear, recommencing treatment with Baclofen should stop them.
